Amazon hired more than 50,000 people for positions in distribution centers across the country on Wednesday, including at the Fall River fulfillment center located at 1180 Innovation Way.

More than 400 candidates toured the facility and were offered on-the-spot job interviews, which included a drug test.

An Amazon spokesperson said more than 200 people are expected to be employed. Positions include packing, labeling and shipping.

“We spent a good hour on the computer, then if you passed that, there’s another test -- a cotton swab,” Mark Yurkins of Fall River said.

The company is planning to hire part-time and full-time employees. Nearly 80 percent are full-time positions.

Full-time employees will be offered benefits beginning on the first day of hire, including medical benefits and tuition pre-payment for high demand careers. Part-time hires will be eligible for medical benefits and tuition pre-payment 90 days after beginning work. Associates working more than 20 hours per week will receive benefits, including life and disability insurance, dental and vision insurance with premiums paid in full by Amazon, and funding towards medical insurance.

“Our wages are competitive, typically the wage of an Amazon Fulfillment Center associate is about 30 percent more than a typical retail store employee’s,” spokesperson Cedric Ross said.

All candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
