Attleboro man accused of striking 12 year-old girl with SUV; his third OUI
Boston, Mass. —
An Attleboro, Massachusetts man is accused of driving drunk and hitting a 12-year-old girl in South Boston Saturday.
Police say 78-year-old Richard Higgins was behind the wheel of an SUV, that hit the girl Saturday afternoon.
Massachusetts State Police say Higgins lost control, swerved right and hit the child. A media partner in Boston tells NBC 10 the child's name is Shalynn.
"She's a beautiful kid. I mean she's smart, helpful. helped everybody out in the neighborhood that she could," said neighbor, Dennis Nemet.
Witnesses said the girl was crossing Old Colony Avenue at the time and that the impact caused her to fly over three cars before landing on the sidewalk.
The victim's mother says her daughter is in serious condition at Tufts Medical Center with multiple injuries including a lacerated liver. She is expected to survive.
Massachusetts State Police say Higgins initially failed to stop after the crash. Witnesses also say Higgins hit multiple cars in the area.
He was subsequently arrested, and charged. Troopers say it was Higgins' third OUI arrest. The Massachusetts State Police Department is investigating.
