Benny’s announces latest round of closings
As of Monday evening, only three Benny’s stores will remain open.
Locations in East Greenwich and Wakefield are set to shut their doors for good by 5 p.m.
The last three stores to stay open for the rest of the year include the one on Branch Avenue in Providence, another in Greenville, which is a village in Smithfield, as well as the location in Taunton.
“Stock from the closed stores will be consolidated into the remaining locations,” according to a spokesman for the family-owned business. “All remaining merchandise is 60 percent off, excluding store equipment and fixtures and Benny’s logo merchandise.”
The spokesman also said the owners of Benny’s encouraging customers to redeem unused Benny’s gift cards as soon as possible.
In September, the owners announced that they would be closing all 31 stores by the end of 2017 after 93 years in business.
“The way the numbers added up and the way the future looked to us, the decision was unavoidable,” Arnold Bromberg, who is the company’s president, said at the time, also citing retirement and changing retail habits as the reason for the closure.
