New Shoreham's Town Council is working on a petition to support a man recently detained by immigration officials.

The Block Island Times reported that the petition calls for freeing Meriton Gurguri, the long-time manager of the Block Island Grocery.

Immigration officials told NBC 10 News that Gurguri was arrested last week for staying in the United States on an expired visa.

He was being held at the Bristol County House of Corrections.

Gurguri is a native of Kosovo.
