Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket plunged into darkness early Wednesday morning when the hospital suffered a power outage and the backup power generator failed to work.

“The generators kicked in. They were running for about an hour or so,” President and CEO Michael Souza told NBC 10 News. “After about an hour in, one of the fuses on the back-up generator let go and it shut down all power.”

That triggered a response from surrounding towns, and brought emergency preparedness and response staff from the Department of Health, according to spokesperson Joseph Wendelken. The Hospital Association of Rhode Island also responded to the scene.

National Grid personnel were at the hospital before and during the power outages -- both the planned and unplanned ones.

“The power was down for maybe 34 minutes and then it came back up,” Souza said. “All the staff worked very well together and with our counterparts in other areas.”

He said one patient was transported to Rhode Island Hospital without incident. The other 84 patients in the hospital were not adversely affected, according to the hospital.

The Department of Health will produce a report on the incident.
