Graduates of Burrillville High School told NBC 10 News that the sharing of sexually-explicit images of students there has been going on for at least two years.

Now, police are investigating who's been posting the photos of more than 40 female students.

“I’ve heard about the Dropbox since I was a senior in high school and I think it actually may have started when we were juniors, so it’s been going on for about two years or more now,” said Jaymee Volante, who graduated from the school in 2015.

According to an affidavit, the photos and videos were uploaded to Dropbox, a website that allows users to share files, including photos and videos.

Allison Bernier of the Providence Center said it’s important for parents whose teens have been affected by this to talk with their children.

“For a lot of these adolescents, you know, they’re embarrassed. They can be humiliated,” Bernier said. “Sometimes there’s cyberbulling going on. And again, that can lead to depression or anxiety or other mental health issues, so it’s important that parents are talking with their child and getting them the help that they need.”

A school administrator notified police about the Dropbox in May, but some parents said they didn’t find out until they saw an NBC 10 report on Wednesday.

NBC 10 went by Superintendent Dr. Frank Pallotta’s office to find out why parents weren’t notified. A reportere was handed a statement which said, “I cannot comment on the ongoing police investigation. Once school officials were made aware of the situation, police were immediately contacted and the investigation is ongoing. Students need to respect themselves and respect others and they need to make smart and good choices.”

Students hope the investigation puts a stop to it.

“It’s really disrespectful to women,” said Sara Straube, who graduated from the school in 2015. “It’s disrespectful to these girls. They’re in high school. They’re young.”

Burrillville police said they couldn’t comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

No arrests have been made.
