Cilantro Mexican Restaurants close 3 locations in RI
A Mexican restaurant chain with seven locations in Rhode Island is closing up shop.
The Cranston Cilantro Mex restaurant on Reservoir Avenue is one of three Cilantro Mex restaurants now closed. The Providence and Warwick locations are also gone.
For now, the other four Cilantro Mex locations remain open. They're in East Providence, North Providence, Coventry, and Newport.
Attorney Rick Land is managing the company's receivership claim, which was filed in April. Filings said the restaurants’ debts are too high to keep all seven Rhode Island locations running.
"I think the four that are surviving certainly can go on,” Land said. “Each of them are going to need some TLC, but overall they're operating well."
Those three restaurants are waiting for auction bids to get them out of their financial troubles.
"We're probably talking hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said Land.
Creditors are frozen now, while the three stores are up for auction during the receivership process.
"We are hopeful that we will find buyers who want to continue these businesses,” said Land.
Land said there's still a possibility, as the company downsizes to four restaurants, the business could survive.
"The only thing I can convey is -- the stores are operating. The food is good. It's fresh, and I don't think people should be worried about going,” said Land.
NBC 10 also spoke to the company holding the auction, which noted that bidding closes Tuesday.
Calls were not returned from the Cilantro Mex owner.
