City celebrates diversity of police graduates

The Providence Police Department held graduation exercises Monday for its latest recruits.

The city said the 68th Training Academy is the "largest and most diverse academy class" in the department's history, as 69 percent are minorities, 21 percent are women, and 27 are first generation citizens of the United States.

Fifty-five recruits graduated from the academy. There were 2,200 applicants.

The ceremony was held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center with Mayor Jorge Elorza, Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré, and Col. Hugh Clements Jr. in attendance.

A full list of graduates, as well as information about each of them, is included below:

Buten, Jose, 23, of New Bedford, MA. Jose graduated from New Bedford High School. He then earned an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Bristol Community College in 2015, and is currently attending at Bridgewater State University for his Bachelor’s Degree. Prior to joining the Providence Police Department Jose was a parking enforcement officer in Newport and a police cadet for the Bridgewater State University Police Department. Jose is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Maria and Amado. Jose is the first one in his family to become a police officer.

Byfield, Raleek, 28, of East Providence, RI. Raleek attended South High School in Worcester, MA, graduating in 2006. He then attended Rhode Island College, earning his Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations with a concentration in General Management in 2011. Raleek then worked in Worcester as a supervisor and member of the Emergency Response Team at a manufacturing company for 6 years prior to entering the Providence Police Training Academy. Son to Marlon and Wendy Byfield, Father to Aria Noelle Byfield. He has family members who are officers of the Worcester Police Department.

Calandra, Tyler, 25, of Providence, RI. Tyler graduated from Suffern High School in Suffern NY and then attended Johnson and Wales University where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Management of Criminal Justice. He previously worked as a substance abuse counselor The Journey HHH in Johnston RI. He is the son of Victoria and Steve.

Camardo, Michael, 23, of Providence, RI. Michael graduated from La Salle Academy and then went on to attend The University of Rhode Island where he majored in history and received his Bachelor’s Degree in 2016. He is the son of Gina and Michael. His Father, Michael, is a Providence Police Officer.

Caminero, Paul, 25, of Warwick, RI. Paul graduated from Bread and Roses Integrated Arts High School. He is a former Correctional Officer at the RI Adult Correctional Institutions. In his spare time, Paul enjoys training in mixed martial arts. He is also fluent in Spanish. Paul and his fiancée, Taisha, have a son Logan.

Campbell, Scott, 22, of South Kingstown, RI. Scott is a 2013 graduate of South Kingstown High School. He then attended Iona College in New Rochelle, New York where he graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He is the son of Paul and Mary-Anne Campbell and has a sister, Taylor, an emergency room nurse at Rhode Island Hospital. His father is Retired Detective Lieutenant Paul Campbell. Campbell is the nephew of Detective Captain William Campbell, Retired Detective Major Stephen Campbell, Retired Captain Jack Ryan and the late Thomas Campbell. All served with the Providence Police Department.

Castagliuolo, Christopher, 23 of Cranston RI. Christopher graduated from Cranston High School West and then attended Roger Williams University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science. Prior to entering the academy, he worked for the TSA at Logan International Airport as Transportation Security Officer for two years. He is the son of Paul and Nancy Castagliuolo and is the oldest of three children. His uncle, Major Stephen Castagliuolo, recently retired from the Connecticut State Police after 30 years of service.

Castro, Omar, 30, of Providence RI. Omar graduated from Central high school. He worked at Rhode Island Hospital as a security supervisor. Omar then became a correctional officer at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility and worked part time as a cat-scan aide at the Miriam Hospital. Omar has two sons Julius Omar Castro and Omar Rocket Castro.

Cifuentes, Michael, 20, of Providence, RI. Michael graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and then attended the Community College of RI. He is currently serving in the U.S. Army as Military Police. Michael is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Gloria and Marco Cifuentes and has two sisters, Melissa and Debbie Cifuentes.

Criner, Raymond, 25, of North Providence, RI. Raymond graduated from North Providence High School and then attended Quinnipiac University. He served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantryman. He is the son of Jodi and Erick. His father, Erick, is a Sergeant for the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs. Raymond was previously a Correctional Officer at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility.

Cruz, Nicholas, 23, of South Kingstown, RI. Nicholas graduated from South Kingstown High School and then attended Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts, obtaining a Bachelor of Science, majored in Criminal Justice. Nicholas is the son of Robert and Rachel Cruz. Father, Robert, is a retired Rhode Island State Police sergeant.

DaCruz, Michael, 30, of North Kingstown, RI. Michael graduated from Durfee High School and then attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration. Having several family members in law enforcement, Patrolman Alberto DaCruz from the Providence Police Department and Detective Trooper Amoncio Dacruz with the RI State Police he opted to apply to the Providence Police to pursue a career in law enforcement. He is the son of Trudy and Alberto DaCruz.

Dennis, Jason, 29, of Woonsocket, RI. Jason graduated from Calabar High School in Kingston Jamaica. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from American International College in Springfield, MA. Jason joined the Vermont Army National Guard in 2013 as a combat medic and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2016. Jason lives with his girlfriend and their daughters Adrianna and Zoë, ages 5 and 3 respectively.

Diaz, Alex, 33, of Providence RI. Alex graduated from Hope High School and then attended the Community College of RI. At CCRI, Alex studied Criminal Justice. Alex is fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Mercedes and Fermin. Alex has an older brother Franklin Diaz, who is a ten-year veteran of the NYPD. Alex and his wife Yoely have a son, Alexander.

Espinal, Eduar, 30, of Providence, RI. Eduar graduated from Central High School and then attended the Community College of RI. Eduar is fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Digna and Pedro. He is a former Elmwood Sports Little League baseball coach.

Fernandez, Sarita, 26, of Pawtucket, RI. Sarita graduated from St. Mary Academy Bay View. She attended Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina she studied Psychology and Criminal Justice and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in 2013. She is the daughter of Candida and Braulio. She was previously employed with the Providence Center, working with both youth and adult population.

Ferreras, Louis, 27, of Providence, RI. Louis graduated from Hope High School and the Community College of Rhode Island before earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Johnson and Wales University. He is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Belkys. He and his wife Nicole have two sons, Orlando and Owen.

Fonseca, Jennifer, 25, of Warwick, RI. Jennifer graduated East Providence High School and then attended Ozga EMT where she was certified as an EMT-Basic. Prior to this academy, she worked as a Correctional Officer at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility. She is the daughter of Vincenza and Louis. Her fiancée Candace is a patrolwoman with the East Providence Police Department.

Gagnon Jr., Jeffrey, 27, of Dighton, MA. Jeffrey graduated from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School and then attended school at Bristol Community College as well as New England Technical Institute, and is currently working towards his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. He is a Second Class Petty Officer in the in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He was also a police officer for five years with the City of Woonsocket, prior to attending the Providence Police Academy. He is the son of Jeffrey and Debbie and has a daughter, Sophia.

Gonzalez, Ybelis, 25, of Providence, RI. Ybelis graduated from Hope High School in June of 2010 and graduated from Rhode Island College in January of 2016 and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Ybelis is also fluent in Spanish. She is the oldest daughter of Mercy and Alex. Her father, Alex Gonzalez is a Providence Police Officer and inspired her interest in law enforcement. Her great uncle Osvaldo Castillo is a retired Providence Police Officer from the 43rd Recruit Class, as well as the first Hispanic officer in the department.

Grimes, Gargar, 24, of Providence, RI. Gargar graduated from Classical High School and then earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Johnson and Wales University. He is the son of Evangeline Stewart and Gargar Grimes Sr. Gargar coaches’ football at Classical High.

Im, Southavout, 25, of Cranston, RI. Southavout graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 2009 and then attended to Rhode Island College for Criminal Justice. He served in the United States Air Force for an ongoing 7 years and served one tour in Ali Al Salem. He was raised by his father Sounanh Phansena and step mother Mary Tran. He will be the first member of his family to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Johnson, Deanna, 33, of Providence, RI. Deanna graduated from Hope High School and then attended Johnson and Wales University where she obtained her Bachelor’s & Master’s Degrees in Criminal Justice. During her undergraduate studies, she had the opportunity to complete an internship with the Providence Police Department. She is the daughter of Cynthia and William, and has two daughters, Aaliyah and Laila.

Joseph, Renaud, 36, of Pawtucket, RI. Renaud graduated from S. J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn NY and then attended Medgar Evers College. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 2004. Joseph is fluent in Haitian Creole. He worked for Lifespan School Solutions/ Bradley School as a Behavior Specialist. He is the son of Marie and Rigaud. He is married to Valerie and has three children, Renahya, Kayla, and Ayden.

Kue, Gerry, 29, of Providence, RI. Gerry graduated from Central High School and then attended the Community College of RI where he obtained an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. Gerry is also fluent in Hmong. He is the son of Youa and Chue Toua Kue. His father, Chue, is a retired Lieutenant Colonel Vietnam Combat War Veteran.

Leroux, Jonathan, 29, of Providence, RI. Jonathan graduated from Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex and then attended the Community College of RI. He enjoys coaching the Providence 49ers Youth Football Organization the past 4 years. Jonathan has two sons with his fiancée Joana. His brother Angel is currently a New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police Officer in the K-9 Unit.

Liu, David, 26, of Attleboro, MA. David graduated from Brockton High School and then attended Fitchburg State University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He has served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for the past 7 years as an infantryman and served one tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is the son of Theresa and David Sr. and is the first in his family to join the law enforcement field.

Malloy, Ryan, 22, of Smithfield, RI. Ryan graduated from Smithfield High School and then attended the University of Rhode Island where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology. He is the son of Diane and Edmond. His grandfather, Edmond Malloy Sr., is a retired Lieutenant of the Providence Police Department and his father, Edmond Malloy Jr., has served for the past 28 years and is still serving for the Providence Police Department.

Manfredi, Nicholas, 27, of North Providence, RI. Nicholas graduated from North Providence High School in 2007. After high school, he attended the Community College of RI where he studied criminal justice. Prior to entering the academy, he held previous employment with the RI Board of Elections. Nicholas is the son of Frank and Angela, and has three brothers, Frank, Vincent, and Marc.

Manzotti, Taft, 33, of North Providence, RI. Taft graduated from North Providence High School and then attended Roger Williams University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. Prior to the police academy, he worked as an EMT. He is the son of Gail and Taft and has one son, Thomas. His father, Taft, and uncle, John, are both retired Providence Police Officers.

McKenna, Brendan, 21, of Warren, RI. Brendan graduated from Mt. Hope High School and then attended Bristol Community College earning an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He is the son of Dawn and Stephen. His father, Stephen McKenna, served as a police officer for 20 years with the Bristol Police Department and is currently a police officer in the city of East Providence for the past 10 years.

McParlin, Brad, 23, of Coventry, RI. Brad graduated from William E. Tolman High School and then attended Johnson and Wales University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Brad is the son of Carrie and James. His father, James, is a correctional officer at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Walpole. His brother, John, is a Cranston police officer.

Moore Jr., Anthony, 27, of Providence, RI. Anthony graduated from LaSalle Academy and Rhode Island College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Justice Studies with a concentration in Criminal Justice. He is a veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom and currently serves as a Military Police Sergeant in the RI National Guard. Moore worked as a Correctional Officer with the RI Department of Corrections and Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility.

Najarian III, John, 28 of Warwick, RI. John graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston Campus. He is the son of Linda and John K. Najarian, Jr. John is the first in his family to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Ngeth, Bunny, 33, of Cranston, RI. Bunny graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and then attended the Community College of Rhode Island where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Bunny is also fluent in Khmer. Bunny is an Army war veteran and is currently serving as a Sergeant with the Army Reserve. She is the daughter of Ya Ngeth.

Peña, Marwing, 27, of Cranston, RI. Marwing graduated from Cranston High School East and then graduated from Rhode Island College in 2013 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Marwing is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Luz and Pedro and has five sisters.

Perez, Jessica, 31, of Warwick, RI. Jessica attended Toll Gate High School and then attended the Community College of Rhode Island. Jessica is fluent in Spanish. She is the daughter of Rosario and Armando. Jessica has one son, Ethan. Prior to entering the Providence Police Academy, Jessica served as a legal assistant for nine years.

Pirolli, Jonathyn, 29, of Warwick, RI. Jonathyn graduated from Cranston High School East and then attended the Community College of RI. He is the son of Ronald and Stephanie. His grandfather Arioste Pirolli is a retired Providence Police officer and his father is a retired Cranston Police Officer.

Rosado, Kalvin, 25, of Providence, RI. Kalvin attended Mt Pleasant High School and then graduated from the Community College of RI in 2015. He is the son of Marcelina Martinez and the oldest of three brothers. Kalvin is fluent in Spanish. Kalvin worked as a jeweler for Tiffany Co. prior to the police academy.

Rousseau, Matthew, 22, of Providence, RI. Matthew Graduated from Cranston West High School and then attended Sacred Heart University, where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice. He is the son of Sheila and Paul Rousseau. His father, Paul, was a member of the Cranston Police Department, his uncle, David Hayden, was a member of the RI State Police and his grandfather, John Hayden, was a member of the Providence Police Department.

Salmeron, Jessica, 25, of Providence, RI. Jessica graduated from Hope High School in 2010 and then attended New England Institute of Technology where she earned her degree in Criminal Justice. Prior the police academy, Jessica worked for Air Canada Airlines. Jessica is also fluent in Spanish. She is the daughter of Ninfa and Jesus Salmeron.

Savard, Thomas, 25, of Coventry, RI. Thomas graduated from North Smithfield High School in 2010 and then attended the Community College of RI. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for six years as an infantryman. He began his Law enforcement career working for Massachusetts Department of Corrections in 2014. He is the son of Cheryl and Tom Savard, brother of Pat Savard, and currently, resides with his girlfriend Emily Hartman.

Schneider, Alex, 27, of Cranston, RI. Alex graduated from Pilgrim High School. He attended the Community College RI where he received his Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement. Upon graduating he transferred to Rhode Island College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. During that time, he was an intern at the BCI Department of the Attorney General's office. He is the son of Patricia and Mark, brother of Kyle and Ethan. Alex resides with his girlfriend Donna.

Sepe Jr., Michael, 35, of Foster, RI. Michael attended Cranston High School East. Prior to joining the Providence Police Academy, Michael worked for the Balise Auto Group for ten years as a Sales Manager. He is the son of Donna and Michael and lives with his girlfriend Sarah who works at the Department of Corrections.

Sherrill, William, 28, of Providence, RI. William graduated from North Providence High School in 2007. William studied at the Community College of Rhode Island, Arizona State University, and at Rhode Island College where he is currently finishing his undergrad, majoring in Sociology, with a minor in Philosophy. He is the son of Patricia McCoy and grandson of the late Louise McCoy.

Tavares, Flavio, 40, of East Providence, RI. Flavio graduated from East Providence High School and then earned a Bachelor's Degree from Johnson & Wales University. He served in the United States Marine Corp for six years. He served as a Convoy Commander during Operation Iraq Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Flavio is also fluent in Portuguese. Flavio worked as a Multi-Media Consultant for eighteen years at the Providence Journal. He is the father of Jessyca, Gabriela and Flavio II.

Taveras, Luis, 34, of Providence, RI. Luis graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and attended Gibbs College where he is earning a Criminal Justice Degree. Luis is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Luis and Nery Taveras. Luis and his wife Letisaida have a son, Lennox.

Torres, Irvin, 23, of Providence, RI. Irvin graduated from Hope High School and now attends Rhode Island College seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. He currently serves in the RI Army National Guard as Military Police. Irvin is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Marta and Will.

Vadney, Larissa, 29 of Plainville, MA. Larissa graduated from Deltona High School in Deltona, FL and then attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. She is the daughter of Glenn and Valerie.

Valletta, Giana, 27, of Cranston, RI. Giana graduated from Cranston High School West. Giana later attended college at Johnson and Wales University where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies, in addition to three major concentrations in Sociology, Psychology, and History. Giana is the granddaughter of Barbara Valletta and great granddaughter of Raymond Paolozzi.

Vargas, Guillermo, 22, of North Providence, RI. Guillermo graduated from North Providence High School and he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at Rhode Island College in Justice Studies. Guillermo is also fluent in Spanish. He is the son of Karla and Victor and brother to Jhonny Vargas.

Vittorioso, Meghan, 22, of Warwick RI. Meghan graduated from Warwick Veterans Memorial High School in 2013 and then attended the Community College of RI. She enlisted in the RI Air National Guard in August 2012 currently holding the rank of Staff Sergeant. She is the daughter of Rhonda and Steven and the sister of Ryanna and Steven Jr.

Voyer, Mitchel, 30, of Johnston, RI. Mitchel graduated from Lincoln Senior High School. He earned his Bachelors of Art in Justice Studies from Rhode Island College and his Master of Science in Crime and Justice Studies from Suffolk University. Mitchel is the son of James and Elisabeth and is married to his wife Jennifer. He was previously employed as a police officer for the City of Warwick.

Waters, Dormica, 37, of Providence, RI. Dormica is presently attending the Community College of Rhode Island. She recently was employed by the RI Family Court for the past ten years in the Juvenile Services Department. Dormica has two children, daughter Monet and son Larry.

Williams, Kyana, 21, of Providence, Rhode Island. Kyana graduated from Hope High School, and then attended Rhode Island College majoring in Justice Studies. She has boxed for over ten years. She is the daughter of Kevin and Wilma Williams and is the first in her family to pursue a career in law enforcement.
