Cranston middle school teacher convicted of sex assault
A Cranston teacher has been convicted of sexual assault.
Matthew Sheridan, 49, was found guilty of one count of first-degree sexual assault of a teenage boy in 2003.
Sheridan was a science teacher at Western Hills Middle School when he was indicted, though the victim was not one of his students. Authorities said the allegations were not related to his job.
Sheridan, who had been put on paid administrative leave after he was indicted in May 2016. He had been accused of sexually assaulting a boy he knew between June 1, 2003, and July 9, 2004.
The boy was 15 and 16 years old at the time of the alleged assaults, the attorney general previously said.
Sheridan is free on surety bail and plans to file a motion for a new trial.
