Massachusetts State Police said Thursday that two women were killed in a single-car crash in Plymouth.

The crash occurred on Route 44 at the Cherry Street ramp at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Montana Hurley, 20, of Sagamore Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kristina McCarthy, 26, of Kingston, was taken to a hospital in Plymouth, where she died.

Police did not immediately release the victims' names.

State police said a preliminary investigation indicates the women were in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler that was traveling from Cherry Street onto Route 44 eastbound when the operator lost control.

The Jeep traveled across both eastbound lanes, through a grass median area, and entered the westbound side of Route 44, where it rolled over.

Police said they are investigating speed as a potential contributing factor and whether the women were wearing seat belts.

Authorities are also working to determine which of the victims was driving the Jeep.
