Cruiser on DUI detail struck by alleged drunk driver
Smithfield Police Officer working as part of Operation Rhode Island Blue Riptide, a law enforcement group working to cut down on DUI incidents, had his cruiser struck by an alleged drunk driver.
The officer was in his vehicle preparing a citation for a motorist stopped for a motor vehicle violation along Douglas Pike, near Branch Pike.
The patrol vehicle was park on the side of the road with its emergency lights activated when it was struck from behind by another vehicle, driving by Derek T. Lewis, 32 of Pascoag.
Lewis was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, Refusal to Submit to a Preliminary Breath Test, Expired Vehicle Registration, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Evidence of Insurance, Reasonable and Prudent Speeds and Laned Roadway Violation.
The Smithfield officer was treated for minor injuries and Lewis was uninjured.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage from the incident, which happened on Saturday morning at approximately 1 a.m.
Lewis was arrested and later released from Smithfield Police HQ with a summons to appear at Kent County District Court on September 12, 2017.
