A town-owned bridge in Cumberland is closed to traffic for an undetermined amount of time.

The Cumberland Public Works Department said the Howard Road Bridge was closed Friday based on recommendations from the state Department of Transportation after an inspection of the bridge decking.

The bridge was closed so RIDOT can do a special inspection and determine what kinds of repairs need to be done. The bridge will be closed indefinitely.

Drivers can follow a signed detour by way of Abbot Run Valley Road in Cumberland or from Paine Road in Massachusetts.
