DMV branch in Wakefield to close temporarily

The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles branch in Wakefield will be closed from May 22 to July 18. (WJAR)

Rhode Island is warning anyone with business at the Division of Motor Vehicles to expect delays and closures for the next several weeks.

The DMV is switching to a new computer system in July, and that means branches will be closed at various times.

The biggest impact will be at the Wakefield office, which will close Monday and won't re-open until July 18.

The branch is being closed so staff can be trained on the new computer system, and then be temporarily assigned to other branches.

Other branches around the state will close for a few days at a time in July. (See schedule here.)

The DMV reminded residents that some transactions can be completed online and that AAA Northeast will allow nonmembers to complete certain DMV transactions at its offices around Rhode Island.
