Funeral held for Harrisville firefighter killed in traffic accident
BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WJAR) —
Friends, family and fellow firefighters on Wednesday said goodbye to Lawrence Castonguay, a 44-year veteran of the Harrisville Fire Department who was killed in a car crash in Gloucester.
Continuing a longstanding tradition, Castonguay’s casket was brought to the church on a fire truck, a vehicle he responded to on calls for many of his 44 years with the fire department.
The fire chief said his department is still in shock about Castonguays’s death. They feel the 73-year-old was robbed of his life after the truck he and his wife, Marie, were riding in was hit by a car on Aug. 30.
Gloucester police said 27-year-old Sam Smith of Thompson, Connecticut was driving the other car.
Smith had reportedly just left Cady's Tavern in Gloucester and was spinning his wheels before losing control, veering into on-coming traffic and crashing into the Castonguay's truck.
Marie, who is still at Rhode Island Hospital, was unable to attend the funeral.
