Man, 43, accused of stealing laptops from RI State House office
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) —
A thief accused of stealing at least two laptops from the Rhode Island State House didn’t get too far.
Carlos Martinez, 43, was arrested just down the hill at Providence City Hall.
The laptops were allegedly stolen from a basement office at the State House, where the suspect could have slipped in through an unlocked window. There were no signs of a break-in.
Martinez was stopped when he entered City Hall Thursday morning because he had been ejected from the building on Wednesday. Then, he and a friend were found wandering around the third floor and unable to explain themselves.
Police escorted them from the building and ordered them not to trespass.
Martinez walked into City Hall Friday morning, and police stopped him for trespassing. Again, they report, he couldn’t say why he was there. While arresting him, police found two laptops, one marked as "State Property."
The Providence Police Department called Capitol Police at the State House, who confirmed they were missing two laptops.
Martinez has been charged with possession of stolen property.
Rhode Island State Police are investigating the incident.
