A New Bedford man is under arrest for allegedly robbing another man at an ATM inside the MBTA Massachusetts Avenue Station on Saturday.

At approximately 10:52 p.m., a 47-year-old man withdrew money from the ATM and was then assaulted, placed into a headlock and had the recently withdrawn cash taken from his hand.

The man resisted and the suspect bit his hand and fled from the station with the cash.

A transit officer spotted the suspect, approached him and attempted to engage him in conversation.

The suspect fled and the transit officer pursued him, from West Newton Street to Huntington Ave and then caught up with him on Belvidere Street.

The officer brought the suspect back to the scene and he was positively identified by the victim.

The suspect is Kelvin Ortiz, 23 from New Bedford. He had previous warrants for Malicious Destruction of Property, B&E Building Daytime, Larceny over $250, Possession of Class B Drugs, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, 209A Violation and Unlicensed Operation.

Ortiz was transported to the Transit Police HQ.
