Only on 10: Students fight outside school, disturbing funeral
CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) —
A fight broke out between students outside a Cranston school Wednesday.
Police responded to Ocean State Academy on Elmwood Avenue Wednesday morning for a report of a fight. While authorities don’t know what led up to the altercation, it resulted in four arrests, including three minors and an adult.
“Apparently, there was a funeral leaving St. Matthew’s Church,” Capt. Russell Henry of the Cranston Police Department said. “ Some people that were involved in the funeral became involved in this dispute with some of the students, emptied out onto the sidewalk or the area in front of the school.”
Shortly after the fight broke out outside the alternative school around 10:30 a.m., police arrested three juveniles and 18-year-old Damaree Wright, who is facing a disorderly conduct charge.
“The adult that was related to one of the juveniles arrestees became involved with the officers and obstructed them in their investigation,” Henry said.
Police said one of the people who was arrested was also Tased for resisting arrest.
A student told NBC 10 News an officer arrested him for recording video of the fight from inside the school, but police said that didn’t happen.
“Three teachers from my school and a couple of officers walked upstairs and said that I’m not allowed to record and then my teacher grabbed my phone out of my hand and put it on the desk and then the officers drove me into the corner and they put my arms behind my back and put me to the floor,” Charles Stinson, a student, said.
The school told NBC 10 it had no comment.
