Play Ball at Rocky Point

Professional baseball returned to Rocky Point State Park today as part of a family event series held by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management called the Great Outdoors Pursuit. Today’s event kicked off with a vintage baseball double header game between the Providence Grays and the New York Mutuals.

Today’s game was not the first-time professional baseball has taken place on the grounds of the former amusement park. Historically, a game took place between the Greys and the Chicago Cubs. During that game, slugger Babe Ruth pitched for Providence. Other activities that took place today included a scavenger hunt, rock wall, food trucks, and educational activities.

The Great Outdoor Pursuit began nine years ago by D.E.M to encourage families to enjoy the outdoors and the state parks throughout the summer months. Per the Department of Environmental Management, 850 people have attended events like this all summer.
