Police arrested a 16-year-old boy they said broke into a Boston-area sporting goods store in the early morning hours and stole a gun and ammunition.

Saugus police responded to an alarm at Dick's Sporting Goods at the Square One Mall at about 4:30 a.m. Monday and found a front window broken.

They saw a person with a gun and ammunition in the store but lost contact with him.

Police said the suspect got the long gun from a locked rack within the store. It has not yet been recovered.

Using store and mall surveillance video, the suspect was tracked to nearby Everett.

Saugus schools sheltered in place during the search.

The mall remained closed while the search was underway.

A post on Facebook said the mall re-opened around 1 p.m., but Dick's Sporting Goods remained closed.
