Police seek man wanted in connection to double murder
Police are searching for a 35-year-old man connected to a double fatal shooting in New Bedford.
Authorities said Carmelo Kercado Jr. has been charged with two counts of murder, as well as the following:
- Carrying an illegal firearm
- Carrying a loaded illegal firearm
- Discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building
Massachusetts State Police on Friday said Kercado is wanted in connection to a shooting that claimed the lives of Stephen Bodden, 27, and Fabio Tavares, 28. They were killed Tuesday around 1:30 a.m. while sitting in a car on Central Avenue in New Bedford.
“Evidence suggests Kercado was in the vehicle with the victims when he shot them,” police said. “After the shooting, the vehicle crashed and he fled on foot.”
According to police, Kercado is black. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and approximately 230 pounds.
Kercado has black hair and was sporting a thick black beard when he was last seen, authorities said. He also has a tattoo of a panther on his back and the word “Jaysayah” on his left forearm.
Police also said Kercado often wears glasses and has gone by serval aliases, including “Melo,” “David Brown,” as well as “Carmelo Mello.”
