A pedestrian was struck and killed by a garbage truck in Providence Wednesday afternoon.

Police told NBC 10 News that 51-year-old Migdalia Gonzalez was hit at the intersection of Hartford Avenue and Whelan Road at about 1 p.m.

Gonzalez was found lying on the ground just outside her home before being transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she died. Investigators said she lived in an apartment building near the scene.

Authorities said a 35-year-old man was driving the truck, which is from Mega MTG Disposal, a company in Seekonk. He has a valid Rhode Island commercial driver’s license and appears to have a clean driving record.

The truck was towed from the scene and will be inspected by the commercial investigation unit on Thursday, which is protocol for an incident like this.

Part of the road was closed as members of the Traffic Bureau conducted an investigation.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but police said neither speed nor drugs or alcohol were factors. No arrests have been made.
