Rhode Island entrepreneur Nicholas Janikies dies at 84
Nicholas Janikies, the man who brought Burger King to Rhode Island and built one of the largest private companies in the state, has died at age 84, the family said Wednesday.
Janikies opened the state's first Burger King on April 30, 1969. Today, the Jan Companies owns all 29 Burger King restaurants in Rhode Island as well as the Newport Creamery chain and other businesses.
Janikies is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret, and four children and five grandchildren.
Woodlawn Funeral Home in Cranston is handling funeral arrangements.
