RI deputy sheriff accidentally discharges gun in hotel room
A Rhode Island Deputy Sheriff has been placed on administrative duty for accidentally discharging his personal handgun, according to authorities.
A spokeswoman for the Rhode Island State Police said the deputy sheriff was attempting to secure his weapon in a room at the Comfort Inn in Rockland, Massachusetts when the gun went off Saturday night just after 7 p.m.
The bullet hit a wall and no one was injured, the spokeswoman said, adding that he was hired in September 2016 and provides courthouse security.
“He is authorized, but not required, to carry a weapon while off-duty,” the spokeswoman said. “The Deputy Sheriff immediately contacted the Rockland Police Department, who investigated the incident and found no evidence of wrongdoing. They further stated in their report that the Deputy Sheriff ‘had zero signs of impairment and no signs of alcohol.’”
Still, the incident remains under investigation.
