RI Legislation: Make harbor seal official state marine mammal
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A state lawmaker is seeking to make the harbor seal the official marine mammal of Rhode Island.
The Providence Journal reports that Rep. Samuel Azzinaro introduced the legislation Wednesday.
The Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce had sent the Westerly lawmaker a letter citing a report that calls the seal the only marine mammal that "can truly be called a resident of Rhode Island." The group says the designation will help raise awareness and appreciation of the seal.
The legislation was requested by the group, along with Save The Bay, the Roger Williams Park Zoo and the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce.
