RIDOT to drivers: Don't be distracted by bridge demolition

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says it wants drivers on the new Sakonnet River Bridge to pay attention to the road in front of them and not the demolition work on the old bridge. (WJAR)

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says it wants drivers on the new Sakonnet River Bridge to pay attention to the road in front of them and not the demolition work on the old bridge.

The DOT said the work will be very noticeable and that it will be loud at times. The DOT said it will not affect traffic on the new Sakonnet River Bridge, but boat traffic could be disrupted.

While drivers may now just notice the work being done on the old bridge, the project began in March.

The first phase of the project to demolish the old bridge will cost about $15 million, but RIDOT is unsure how much the second part of the project will cost in part because the second part could include explosive demolition.

It's expected that the old Sakonnet River Bridge will be demolished by summer of next year.
