An 18-year-old student was seriously injured while he was riding a skateboard at the University of Rhode Island Thursday night, according to a spokesman for the school.

Henry Karshis, of Foxborough, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in a helicopter after colliding with an SUV driven by Stephano Gikas, 19 of Montvale, New Jersey. Karshis' condition is currently unknown.

The spokesman said Karshis and Gikas are both students at the school.

The crash took place on West Alumni Avenue, which is west of Butterfield Road on the Kingston Campus, around 5:30 p.m.

“In the aftermath of the accident, staff from the University's Division of Student Affairs met with students who were in the area at the time of the accident, offering them information on University support resources,” the spokesman said. “In addition, a member of URI's Counseling Services went to the hospital, and a counselor also met with the driver of the vehicle on campus.”

URI Police, who have not filed charges at this time, are investigating the crash.

“The University offers its support to all members of the URI community following this terrible accident,” the spokesman said.
