Massachusetts State Police warn public about scam calls
Massachusetts State Police are warning the public about a scam call that was allegedly generated from the State Police General Headquarters.
A New York City woman received a suspicious phone call asking for her personal information and reported the phone number to be from 508-820-2300, which is the state police headquarters.
Police said they believe it was a spoofing case, in which a hoaxer made the call appear to be coming from a legitimate source. It is commonplace for hoaxers to use police numbers to give the appearance of credibility.
The Massachusetts State Police are reminding the public they would not be calling seeking personal information. If you receive such a call, you should hang up immediately.
You can report suspicious calls to the Communications Department at Massachusetts State Police at 508-820-2121.
