Teachers face layoffs in Warwick Public Schools
Thirty-one teachers in Warwick Public Schools could be out of their jobs as early as next month.
The school department said the potential cuts are contingent on the district's budget for next year.
The Providence Journal reported that the School Committee is requesting a $167 million school budget for next year that would also need $4.8 million in additional local funding.
If the City Council does not fund the full amount, the layoffs may be needed.
The head of the Warwick teachers union said the cuts would especially affect reading specialists and elementary guidance counselors...
The 31 cuts would include teachers in kindergarten through 12th grade.
The union said those 31 teachers have already been notified and that last night, the school committee officially voted to approve the potential cuts.
The City Council will vote on the budget sometime in June, and the potential layoffs would go into place for the next school year.
