A Warwick man was seriously hurt when a fire destroyed his home.

Firefighters were called to the house on Royal Avenue in Conimicut at about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Two people escaped unharmed, but officials said the man who was injured suffered burns to the lower part of his body.

A neighbor said the man was on fire and people nearby tried to help him.

"He was in flames. He was rolling on the ground, and I think the neighbors directly next door were trying to throw water on him," Veronica Taubman said.

Firefighters said even though his injuries are serious, they're not believed to be life-threatening.

The homeowner said two birds and a cat were killed in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but investigators said it doesn't appear to be suspicious.
