New Bedford woman, 21, killed in Dartmouth crash
A woman was killed in a single-car crash in Dartmouth Thursday afternoon.
Massachusetts State Police said they responded to Interstate 195 eastbound near Reed Road around 1:35 p.m.
Three people, including two women and a juvenile passenger, had to be extricated by Dartmouth firefighters.
Police said a front passenger, Stephanie Merejildo, 21, of New Bedford, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was flown to Rhode Island Hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries. Her name and condition were not immediately available.
The juvenile passenger was transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Rhode Island with unknown injuries.
According to authorities, a preliminary investigation revealed that “a 1998 Honda Civic was traveling in the left lane on Route 195 eastbound when for an unknown reason the vehicle swerved sharply to the right. The Honda traveled across all eastbound lanes, entering the soft shoulder on the breakdown lane side facing rearward. The Honda then struck a tree causing severe damage to the Honda.”
While the cause of the crash is under investigation, troopers are looking into whether speed was a potential contributing factor, as well as if the women were wearing seat belts.
The names of the people involved have not been released.
