The staff at Biomes Marine Biology Center rescued a young octopus from local waters Sunday morning -- and it is now on display.

The octopus appears to be about three months old and appears to be doing well in its new home, according to a post on the Biomes Marine Biology Center Facebook page.

Biomes is hosting a naming contest for the new arrival and asking for names of gemstones.

“The name with the most votes (including likes) wins,” the post noted, adding that its gender is unknown.

Past octopuses were named Ruby, Garnet, Pearl, Sapphire, Topaz, Amber, Coral, Opal, and Ivory.

Biomes is located at 6440 Post Road in North Kingstown.
