Florida state senator resigns over racist remarks
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) - Republican Frank Artiles resigned from the Florida State Senate Friday morning, two days after apologizing on the Senate floor for using a racial slur and vulgar insults in a conversation with two African-American lawmakers.
"My actions and my presence in government is now a distraction to my colleagues, the legislative process, and the citizens of our great State," wrote Artiles in his resignation letter. "I apologize to my family and friends and I apologize to all of my fellow Senators and lawmakers. Tot he people of my district and all of Miami-Dade, I am sorry I have let you down and ask for your forgiveness."
Artiles was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2010 and served there until his election to the Senate in 2016.
