Can't afford to travel this summer?  NBC 10 has you covered with some close-to-home adventures perfect for your stay-at-home vacation or "staycation."

If you’re taking a staycation this year, you're not alone. NBC 10's Kelly McGee reports that the high price of gas has a lot of residents looking for fun close to home.

Because we live in Southern New England vacation in our own backyard isn't such a bad idea.

“We are so fortunate to live in this area with Newport, the Cape and beaches all within a short drive,” says AAA of Southern New England spokesperson Mary Maguire.

When it comes to searching out close to home adventures, AAA of Southern New England has done a lot of the legwork for you.  The AAA Web site is filled with ideas and more importantly, information on finding the best bargains.

Maguire says there are plenty of deals to be had for the smart consumer.

One of the most important things to remember about a staycation is to do something fun.  Don't clean out your closets or paint the house, unless of course, you like that sort of thing.

If all other vacation plans fails, the beach is always a bargain in the Ocean State.  "One great thing about beaches is that they are free, except for the parking, and you can stay as long as you want," Maguire says.
