Chairman of Providence Democrats forced out over meme
CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) —
The chairman of the Providence Democratic City Committee resigned Friday in a dustup over a post he made on Facebook.
Patrick Ward lost the support of Mayor Jorge Elorza, who basically runs the committee, because his online post was deemed offensive to Italian-Americans.
Ward was chairman of the committee for the past year. His wife, Sabina Matos, was acting president of the City Council but replaced in a move engineered by David Salvatore and John Igliozzi.
Ward posted a meme on Facebook with two characters from "The Godfather" movie. It sat online for more than a month before another Italian-American city councilor raised a fuss about it this week, despite apologizing last night on NBC 10 and Friday morning on radio,
Ward saw he'd lost too much support and put out a statement saying in part: "Recent events have caused a distraction on one of the most important elections in recent memory. It is but for my love of the Democratic Party that I feel it best to resign."
It wasn't immediately clear who will replace Ward as chairman.
The party committees in each town are where candidates go for endorsements and campaign help.
