Nirva LaFortune wins Providence Ward 3 special primary

Voters in Providence's Ward 3 cast ballots Wednesday in a Democratic special primary to fill a vacant City Council seat, with Nirva LaFortune earning a landslide victory.

LaFortune garnered 1,147 votes, with Mark Santow getting 339 and Daniel Chaika receiving 223, according to the Providence Board of Canvassers. The votes will be certified Thursday.

LaFortune will face Republican David Lallier Jr. and independent Christopher Reynolds in the special election on Aug. 16.

Councilman Kevin Jackson was recalled by voters in May after embezzlement charges were filed.
