New Bedford voters went to the polls Tuesday in a preliminary election.

They narrowed the number of candidates in races for mayor and City Council.

The Standard Times reported that incumbent Mayor Jon Mitchell will face political newcomer Charles Perry Jr. in November's final election.

Mitchell Garner finished a distant third. Only the top two vote-getters advance.

Mitchell is hoping voters return him to office for a fourth term.

Voters in Wards 1, 2, 4 and 5 chose candidates for City Council races.

Voter turnout was less than 10 percent, according to the Standard Times.
