Leach named head coach of P-Bruins


The Boston Bruins announced Monday that Jay Leach as been named head coach of the Providence Bruins.

A news release said Leach, 37, served as an assistant coach for the Providence Bruins for the 2016-17 season. Before coming to Providence, Leach served as an assistant coach for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during the 2015-16 season.

A native of Syracuse, New York, Leach spent 11 seasons as a defenseman in the NHL and the AHL from 2002-13. He skated in 70 career National Hockey League games for five different teams, including the Boston Bruins. Leach played four seasons at Providence College.

Previous P-Bruins head coach Kevin Dean was promoted to a assistant under Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy.

The 2017-18 Providence Bruins season kicks off at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 7 against Springfield.
