Mcllroy draws big crowd at 20th annual CVS Health Charity Classic
BARRINGTON, R.I. (WJAR) —
The 20th annual CVS Health Charity Classic is officially in the books.
It was a successful event Monday morning at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, with the best crowd attendance in 15 years, thanks in part to PGA star Rory Mcllroy.
"It’s great what Brad (Faxon) and Billy (Andrade) have done over the past 20 years here, you know? They're great guys and they do a lot of great work for the community here and you can tell they're very well liked just by the feel that they have assembled,” Mcllroy said.
Event co-host Billy Andrade, in turn, praised Mcllroy.
"You know Rory Mcllroy -- a guy like that really makes a difference,” Andrade said. “When you can get a star that’s world class that everybody knows and he's so great --he's so gracious and such a nice guy. For a guy like that to show up, it really energizes our events.”
Brad Faxon shared similar sentiments.
"It’s awesome. It’s incredible,” Faxon said. “I mean, look at the crowds out here. A lot of it is because we have Rory Mcllroy and So Yeon Ryu. It’s just everything."
The event as raised more than $21 million for local charities over the first 19 years.
"It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years and we're really proud of the $21 million donated to charities,” CVS CEO Larry Merlo said. “With the crowds today, we certainly look forward to adding to that total this year.”
