On The Tee: Snell Golf
There are tons of golf balls out there to choose from, and prices can range to more than $50 for a dozen balls. There's a local company based in New Bedford that has one mission: to bring tour-caliber equipment to the amateur golfer at an affordable price.
"I'm a Massachusetts-Acushnet boy. I was born in Massachusetts and brought up in Acushnet, went to New Bedford High School. I'm from this area. My family lives in Dartmouth, right around the corner. We have a lot of friends and family here," said Dean Snell.
Snell is the president and CEO of Snell Golf. He designed Snell golf balls with 28 years of experience working in research and development for companies like Titleist and TaylorMade. Dean's name is on 40 ball patents and is the inventor or co-inventor of the most popular ball in the game, the PRO V1.
"Our flagship product is called My Tour Ball. It's a cast urethane golf ball. Cast urethane technology is the best in golf. The material is outstanding. You cast it very thin. It's a multilayer three-piece ball where we control the core to help the driver spin. The mantle layer controls the iron spin and that thin cast urethane cover gives the durability, soft feel and short-game performance. So you have total tee-to-green performance with a cast urethane ball that's used by all the tour players today but affordable for everybody to try," Snell said.
"So if we can give this performance, a tour ball type performance to the players and allow them to have what the tour players have, but keep it affordable, that's the goal," he said.
