What it takes to be a Newport tennis ball kid

Part of the tradition is the ball kids who are out on the court during every match.

The tradition of an annual professional tennis tournament has been going on in Newport for more than 100 years.

Part of the tradition is the ball kids who are out on the court during every match.

There are 12 kids for every match. All of them local kids between the ages of 12 and 16.

So how do they know what to do?

That's the job of husband and wife team Becky and Mike Silva of Johnston.

For the past 10 years, they have served as ball kid coordinators. Mike's a tennis teacher in Rhode Island.

This year, they have trained 63 kids to work the matches, retrieving balls, providing players towels, and updating the scoreboard.
