FAQ: NBC Boston explained for the Providence/New Bedford viewer

NBC Boston launches Jan. 1, 2017. (NBCUniversal)

Revised 12/20/16

What's Happening?

On Jan., 1, 2017, WHDH Channel 7 in Boston will no longer carry NBC programming. At that time, NBC programming will move to a NEW television station. This new television station will be named "NBC Boston." This is a change within the Boston television market. The NBC Boston situation does not involve WJAR NBC 10 in the Providence/New Bedford market.

What's NBC Boston?

NBC Boston is a new television station. The station is owned by NBC and operates out of Newton, Massachusetts. It is the sister station of New England Cable News (NECN) and Telemundo Boston. But NBC Boston is completely new. NBC Boston is unique in that it will be broadcasting on three different over-the-air channels and at least one other, different cable channel.

What channel is NBC Boston?

NBC Boston is unique in that it will be broadcasting on three different over-the-air channels and at least one other different cable channel:

WBTS, Channel 8.1, in the immediate Boston metro area

WNEU, Channel 60.2, in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts

WMFP, Channel 60.5

On many Boston-area cable systems, NBC Boston will be on Channel 10.

I've seen something that says NBC Boston will be on Channel 10. Isn't WJAR on channel 10?

WJAR is channel 10 and will remain channel 10. WJAR is the NBC affiliate for the Providence/New Bedford market. WJAR broadcasts on channel 10.1 and will remain on channel 10.1. WJAR's channel will not move. The NBC Boston situation does not involve WJAR. NBC Boston will be channel 10 on most Boston-area cable systems only.

What's "Boston Area"?

Short answer: if you live in Bristol County, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island you are in the Providence/New Bedford market. For the purposes of television markets, you are not in the Boston area.

The United States has been divided into television markets. These are controlled by the FCC. The Boston television market includes metro Boston, southern New Hampshire, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and most of eastern Massachusetts —except Bristol County.

Bristol County, Massachusetts, is a part of the Providence/New Bedford television market. WJAR is the NBC affiliate for the Providence/New Bedford market.

How can I watch NBC Boston?

Most of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts, could have difficultly viewing NBC Boston. WNEU channel 60.2 is in New Hampshire, WBTS channel 8.1 is a low-power signal out of Needham, Massachusetts, and WMFP Channel 60.5 is a digital sub-channel for another TV station.

I use an antenna. Will I lose NBC programming when WHDH loses NBC programming?

You will not lose NBC programming. WJAR's channel 10.1 signal covers the areas WBTS 8.1 and WNEU 60.2 do not cover. All of the NBC programming you watch on WHDH channel 7.1 will be on WJAR channel 10.1.

Why is this happening?

This a business decision by NBC Universal, the owner of NBC. NBC Universal is owned by Comcast.
