NBC 10 News dominates May ratings period

NBC 10 News at 6pm is the Area's Most Watched News, 11pm Time Period is No Longer a Contest
NBC 10 News remains the dominant television news source in Southern New England, according the preliminary data from the Nielsen Company for the just-completed May sweeps period. Of the top ten news shows in Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA, eight are on NBC 10.
NBC 10 News at 6:00pm, with Patrice Wood and Gene Valicenti, is the most watched local newscast in the market. With 53,000 viewers, the newscast showed 10% growth year-to-year and has 12,000 more viewers than the nearest competitor. With 6 and 7 ratings respectively, NBC 10 News at 5:00pm and 5:30pm both showed year-to-year growth and won their time periods.
WJAR's freshman newscast - NBC 10 News at 7:00pm with Dan Jaehnig and Alison Bologna - continues to be one of the most watched 7pm newscasts in the country. With a 6 rating and 37,300 viewers, the newscast is in a ratings tie with former time-period powerhouse Wheel of Fortune.
The once-competitive 11:00pm time period is no longer a contest. With a 6 rating and 36,300 viewers, NBC 10 News at 11:00 with Patrice Wood and Dan Jaehnig experienced 6% year-to-year growth. WPRI saw its 11:00pm newscast decline 15%, dropping its rating below a 4. With WPRI/WNAC's 10:00pm newscast stagnant year-to-year, WJAR retains the "Late Night News Leader" title with a combined 12 rating points at 7:00pm and 11:00pm, versus WPRI's combined 8 rating points at 10:00pm and 11:00pm.
NBC 10 News Sunrise with Frank Coletta and Barbara Morse Silva remains the dominant morning newscast in Southern New England. WJAR's two-and-a-half hour news block grew its audience year-to-year by 2%. The 6:00am hour maintained a 6 rating, book-to-book. The market's premier morning newscast surpassed the competition by 2 full rating points and 12,000 viewers. The 5:30am news block experienced the most impressive growth. With a remarkable 24% year-to-year increase, this newscast now has 15,000 more viewers than the nearest competitor.

Users are rediscovering NBC 10's home on the web, which launched with new features and a more intuitive layout. Also in May, the station's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/nbc10, surpassed 64,000 fans and its Twitter page, www.twitter.com/nbc10, eclipse 18,000 followers, giving NBC 10 the largest social media audience in the Southern New England media market.
