Storm Team 10: Historical look at 60 degrees in Southern New England
A stretch of unseasonable warmth brought locations in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts to the 60s on Sunday. The official reading at T.F. Green Airport was 62 degrees, just two degrees shy of the record high of 64 set in 1997.
But, is this a common time to see 60 degrees? I went back to 2000 to find out when these unseasonable temperatures came to our region.
Out of the last 17 years, the 60-degree mark has been recorded in either January, February, or March 15 times. Nine of those times came in January alone! Even more impressive, in the years 2000, 2007, and 2012, Providence saw 60 degrees in the week of Jan. 1-7.
So, Sunday's mild afternoon was certainly a breath of fresh air ... but as history shows, this is somewhat typical!
