Severe Thunderstorm warning issued for all of Rhode Island
A Severe Thunders Storm warning has been issued for all of Rhode Island until 6:45 p.m.
The system that the Storm Team 10 meteorologists have been tracking for a few days is quickly approaching Southern New England and looks to pack a punch.
As anticipated, temperatures rose by midday and that daytime heating is enhancing the instability in the atmosphere. The cold front from our northwest will be sliding towards the Rhode Island-Massachusetts border near 4 p.m. The brunt of these storms will move through between 5 and 8 p.m.
Initially, the impacts were reserved to heavy downpours and gusty wind. Now, there is an elevated risk for hail development in Rhode Island. Some of this hail could exceed quarter-sized and be damaging. The severe risk really goes up for those to our west, but the energy coming through will bring the potential for power outages.
The concern really diminishes around 10 p.m., and by midnight this system should wrap up and stall out to our south. Be sure to keep up with Chief Meteorologist Mark Searles as he tracks these potentially powerful thunderstorms.
