Block enters race for governor as Republican

{}Ken Block, a 2010 candidate for Rhode Island governor on the Moderate Party he founded, says he'll make a run next year, this time as a Republican.

He announced he will register as a Republican at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Barrington Town Hall.

In a letter to GOP voters, Block says he wants to restore what he calls "fiscal sanity."

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung is expected to seek the GOP nomination and has an unspecified announcement planned for Nov. 4.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras also is set to formally kick off his candidacy on Monday.

The Democratic mayor will be the first prominent Democrat to enter the race to succeed Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who won't seek a second term in 2014. Democratic state Treasurer Gina Raimondo says she's also considering a run.
