Hitchhiking robot finds friends in Rhode Island

An international celebrity traveling from the East to West Coast is visiting Southern New England.

hitchBOT, a hitchhiking robot, spent Saturday in Rhode Island visiting landmarks, taking photos and interacting with fans.

"It's like walking around with a celebrity," said Kyle Silva, hitchBOT's guide in Rhode Island. "People are coming from everywhere to meet her."

hitchBOT's cross-country journey started July 17th in Boston and will end in San Francisco. Every city the robot visits she is taken around by a complete stranger. Kyle Silva picked up hitchBOT Friday night after she watched the Red Sox play at Fenway Park.

"Ever since we've been going on adventures," Silva said.

The robot has solar panels to keep her running along with a camera and microphone that allows her to communicate.

Thousands of people following hitchBOT's journey on her social media accounts, and the GPS system built in her allows fans to track her location.

hitchBOT next stop is to Connecticut before heading to Times Square in New York City.

Earlier this year hitchBOT traveled across Germany and the Netherlands. In 2014 hitchBOT traveled across Canada in 26 days.
