Pawtucket River Bridge to open to northbound traffic
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said it will open the new Pawtucket River Bridge on Interstate 95 to northbound traffic on Friday.
The DOT said a weight restriction on the northbound lanes will also be lifted, eliminating the need for trucks and other heavy vehicles to use a detour.
"All northbound trucks will be able to remain on I-95 and the northbound detour through Pawtucket will no longer be necessary," RIDOT Director Michael Lewis said in a news release.
Lane restrictions will be put in place beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday to move traffic onto the new bridge. I-95 north in Pawtucket will be closed to all traffic at midnight to finalize lane striping. Drivers will have to use exit 27 and the Division Street Bridge as a bypass.
All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m.
The DOT said drivers should use alternate routes such as Route 146 or Interstate 295 during the overnight hours to avoid delays.
