Interview with HUD Secretary Ben Carson: EnVision Centers

(Sinclair Broadcast Group)

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - The Department of Housing and Urban Development is building facilities known as EnVision Centers all across our country. I spoke to HUD Secretary Ben Carson about what these EnVision Centers will do for our communities.

SECRETARY CARSON: So what it does, is it brings federal, as well as state and local government resources, into the same building with people who need the resources. This really enables people to get what they need in order to become self sufficient. For a very long period of time, for many, many decades, we’ve really not concentrated on the people. Now we’re concentrating on the people themselves and how do we empower them and there are four basic pillars: we look at economic empowerment, educational advancement, health and wellness, leadership and character development.

BORIS: How many EnVision Centers are there now and how do you plan for there be?

CARSON: Well we opened the first ones in Detroit a few weeks ago and announced at that time the first cohort of 17 and then there will be subsequent announcements of several cohorts as time goes on. Eventually, we’d like to see hundreds of them, maybe even thousands of them. We want to see them in every single place where there is economic depression. We have to start developing our people not just be satisfied to shift them over in a corner and say we’re taking care of them. That doesn’t’ work.

Here's the bottom line: the Trump administration continues to think outside the box in order to help solve the poverty crisis in our country. These EnVision Centers will be brick and mortar, and will go a long way toward instilling self-sufficiency throughout the country.
