A Rhode Island viral sensation landed on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday and sang her go-to karaoke song alongside Missy Elliott, who surprised her on stage.
A video of Mary Halsey went viral last month that shows the West Warwick resident singing Elliott’s "Work It" at Goddard Park in Warwick. Elliott shared the video on social media and it didn’t take long before it piqued the interest of Ellen DeGeneres.
DeGeneres asked Halsey what it was like to get the attention of Elliott.
"I have to sit back. I can’t even tell you," Halsey said. "It was a shock. I never expected this. I put it out there and said I want to go viral, but I never thought it would happen."
Halsey told DeGeneres that she's spent 15 years perfecting her go-to-karaoke song --- reversed lyrics and all.
"You understand what the lyrics mean in there," DeGeneres asked her.
Halsey responded, "Well I do but I wasn't thinking about it when I was singing them."
Halsey was also presented with a jacket that says "Missy's Funky White Sister."
"Ellen" airs at 4 p.m. weekdays on NBC 10.
