It's the beginning of the month, which means the rent is due for millions of Americans who haven't been able to pay.

The nationwide eviction moratorium expired Sunday morning. The U.S. House was unable to pass a bill to extend the moratorium before going on August recess, leaving millions at risk of no protection from post-pandemic evictions.

The RentReliefRI program from Rhode Island Housing began on April 1 after the state and Rhode Island Housing received millions of dollars from the Federal Emergency Rental Assistance program.

Renters struggling to pay rent and utilities as a result of the pandemic could qualify for up to 12 months of emergency assistance. It can cover rent and utilities owed back to April 1, 2020, and cover three future months as well.

Tenants must meet eligibility requirements. Landlords must provide proof of property ownership and past-due rent notices.

Anyone interested can call 855-608-8756 or visit the RentReliefRI website.
